چکیده

A 56-y-old woman with a history of non–small cell lung cancer presented with a persistent left pneumothorax and a left bronchopleural fistula after bronchial balloon occlusion. A ventilation–perfusion scan using 133Xe and 99mTc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA) was requested to evaluate for possible lung reduction surgery. With 428.46 MBq (11.58 mCi) of 133Xe gas, ventilation images were acquired in the posterior projection during a single breath-hold in the equilibrium and washout phases. Regions of interest were drawn around the lungs to generate ventilation time–activity curves. Then, 162.06 MBq (4.38 mCi) of 99mTc-MAAwere injected intravenously and 8 standard projections of the lungs were acquired. Regions of interest were drawn around the lungs to calculate differential perfusion.

Bronchopleural fistula following M. abscessus infection 11 years after lobectomy for lung cancer

Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a potentially fatal complication of lung cancer resection surgery that occurs during the healing process of the bronchial stump. However, the vulnerability of the healed surgical wound to overlapping acquired airway destruction has not yet been determined in detail. We herein present a case of fatal BPF following Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) infection, ...

Orbital emphysema in COPD with bronchopleural fistula

Orbital emphysema is usually a benign, self-limited condition. Intraorbital extension of the entrapped air in the absence of an orbital fracture is extremely rare. Although benign, a careful periodic monitoring of intraocular pressure, optic nerve examinations, and prompt management are warranted in order to prevent tension pneumoobitus secondary to increasing intraorbital pressure by the orbit...

Risk factors for early mortality and morbidity after pneumonectomy: a reappraisal.

BACKGROUND Pneumonectomy remains a high-risk procedure. Comprehensive patient selection should be based on analysis of proven risk factors. METHODS The records of 323 pneumonectomy patients were retrospectively reviewed. Multiple demographic data were collected. End points were operative mortality at 30 and at 90 days, major procedurally related complications, and cardiovascular events. Univa...

Statins and Pulmonary Hypertension in Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease

Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a chronic multisystem disease with a considerable burden. One of its most common complications is pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). Different medications have been proposed for the treatment of PAH, among which one can name statins. Howeve...
